passion-pit2You can’t really look anywhere without at least hearing someone mentioning Passion Pit and their debut titled Manners. I’m not exactly on the bandwagon quite yet, as I still think the lead singer’s falsetto makes me want to pull my hair out. But for the most part, the music itself is catchy and that can make the difference in some instances.

From the singer-songwriter side of the spectrum, you’re in luck, as a few well-known names have new albums out this week including John Vanderslice and Iron & Wine with a 2-CD set of unreleased material.

A few other releases I’m excited to listen to this week would have to be Au Revoir Simone’s Still Night, Still Light, Jarvis Cocker’s Further Complications (despite that horrid single), Jason Lytle’s (formerly of Grandaddy) Yours Truly, The Commuter, White Rabbits’ It’s Frightening, and Polly Scattergood’s self-titled debut.

the-field-yesterday-and-todayPitchfork premiered a brand new, and blissfully wonderful track from Yesterday and Today, the forthcoming record from Sweden’s The Field.

It breathes with a slow moving, repetitive (in the best way) force, and while it may not burn up the dancefloor, it will certainly get your head moving.

And in a moment that certainly made me hold my breath for a few seconds, during the first break towards the middle of the song we hear a looping vocal sample from the Cocteau Twins track “Lorelei” off 1984’s Treasure.  Now, I’m normally not too quick with obscure samples and such, but Liz Fraser’s vocals are unmistakable no matter how it’s used.

The new record from The Field is due out on May 19th here in the the U.S. on Anti-, and if you haven’t had a chance to listen to the 2007 debut From Here We Go Sublime, do yourself a favor and check it out.  I still play it once in a while, and it’s still an absolute joy to listen to.
