There’s never a good explanation for whenever I feel the need to put together these completely random mixes.  I think tonight I just needed to put my mind at ease, and the following just happened to be the songs that did this for me.  Listening to these bring about feelings of nostalgia, hopefulness, and an eagerness for what’s to come.  Tomorrow could bring about a completely different set of songs, but I’m just going to sit back and enjoy these for the time being.  Hopefully, you enjoy these too.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (2009)
The Sundays :: “My Finest Hour”

Get Lost (1995)
The Radio Dept. :: “Lost and Found”

Back in December I mentioned the forthcoming release of a new split 7″ single from Moscow Olympics/The Morning Paper, which was released recently on Lostmusic Records.  Only 300 copies were made available, but I never bothered to pick one up for myself since I had no way of playing it.  Because of that, I never had the chance to even hear the Moscow Olympics single until a couple of days ago when I was able to snag an MP3.

I’ve now listened to it an unhealthy number of times and just had to share it with all of you.  It’s such a gorgeous track that continues to build on their incredible mini-LP Cut The World, which you may remember I proclaimed as my favorite album of 2008.  Each of their songs seem to tread a similar path through a lush, dream-like landscape of soaring guitar melodies and finely crafted indiepop goodness.  Bands with such striking consistency don’t come along too often, and I’m just very optimistic at what they are capable of in the future.

I just love the hell out of this band.

After a solid year of garnering buzz from both their 7″ single “Still” and stunning debut mini LP Cut The World, the Filipino quintet are looking to build upon that buzz with a brand new split 7″ single which will also feature Sweden’s The Morning Paper.  Initially meant to be released before the end of 2008, it is now set to hit sometime in January as a limited edition with just 300 copies.  You’ll be able to pick up this sure to be amazing single on Lostmusic Records.

Let me just say that I’ve been a huge supporter of this band since the very first time I heard “Still,” and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that they’re one of the best indiepop, nay,  just best bands in general that i’ve heard in a couple of years.

moscow-single.jpgI forgot to mention this last month, but I was still on my little mini break at the time. If you’ve been keeping up with Moscow Olympics since they were first mentioned here on the site back in November, than you might’ve noticed that around Christmas time their first 7″ was finally released on Fraction Discs! If you happened to miss that previous post (read it!), not only is this quintet from the Phillippines, but they play some of the dreamiest shoegaze i’ve heard in years. It’s truly unreal how amazing this couple of songs i’ve heard are, and they have certainly become a band to keep an eye on in the future. Here’s a little description that Fraction Discs has on the single, just because you can see the love they have for this band:

Pop as a dream come true, two tracks that raise their gaze off their shoes, stare into the skies and fill the unexpected yet somehow eagerly awaited gap in your record collection – the one between Blueboy’s “Unisex” and The Wake’s “Here Comes Everybody”.

The 7″ single includes the jaw-droppingly amazing single “Still,” which can be heard on the band’s myspace, along with the b-side “Talk Like This.” Also included is a code that will allow you to download the songs in MP3 format! And after continuous searching, I finally found a mp3 of one of their songs. Seriously, it was difficult to find – so I hope you enjoy it!

Until recently, I had no previous knowledge of any kind of Filipino indiepop movement, let alone any decent music coming out of the Philippines to begin with. This was all unbeknownst to me until very recently, when I first heard this five-piece Moscow Olympics. They hail from the Philippines, but i’m not sure exactly where. After I heard the two demo tracks “Still” and “Safe” on their myspace page, I completely fell in love. Being Filipino myself, I couldn’t be anymore excited and proud to know that this kind of beautiful noise could come from there.

Named after an Orange Juice b-side, which you shouldn’t compare to at all in terms of sound, Moscow Olympic’s dreamy pop harkens back to bands of decades past like My Bloody Valentine, New Order and Blueboy. I’ve spent numerous nights trying to find out as much information as possible, but of course it’s very scarce. I couldn’t find anything to download or purchase, but thankfully later this year, Sweden’s Fraction Discs announced that they will release the band’s debut 7″ which will feature “Still” that can be heard on their myspace and b-side “Talk Like This.”

Since I couldn’t find any songs for you to download, I did come across this blurry video of live performance. I’m not sure what the song is, but it’s sparkling dreampop as you can expect. Hopefully, we’ll be hearing a lot more from this group soon. Go listen to those myspace songs! Thanks to Skatterbrain also for introducing me to this amazing band!
