Amy Klein knows how to do epic. You may recognize her as the extremely joyful one who plays violin and guitar in the current lineup of Titus Andronicus (whose album The Monitor, is certainly nothing less than epic.) Her solo project, Solanin, proves that she can take epic to a different geographic region (the first song is entirely in Japanese) and a different tempo. The storytelling aspect of For the Sky gives nods to both Neutral Milk Hotel and Joanna Newsom, another string-slinging singer (say that five times fast, I dare ya.) However, Klein’s voice is decidedly nicer than both and the bucolic scenery that she paints in For the Sky is an interesting coin flip from tales of battles and drunken bar nights. I hope you also enjoy “Ame No Uta” and you can download the entire album at solanin.bandcamp.com
