Laura Veirs

July FlameWe haven’t even finished 2009 and it already looks as if 2010 will start off with a bang as far as album releases go.  Yes, we all know about the Beach Houses and the Yeasayers of the world, but there’s one release in particular that I’ve been currently pining for is Laura Veirs’ July Flame.  I only discovered her for myself with 2007’s Saltbreakers, but most music-savvy folk will tell you that she’s been generally overlooked with nearly all of her solo work.  It’s an absolute shame really that such a talented songwriter can go easily unnoticed, but that’s why I’m mentioning this right now.  As a blogger, I consider it my job to provide the kind of coverage that this deserves, so if a few more people discover her through this, than I can definitely sleep a little bit easier at night.

Listening to the album for myself recently, as well as seeing her perform here in SLC a week or so ago, July Flame is a bit more stripped-down compared to Saltbreakers.  You won’t find any songs here with the kind of thumping beats of “Don’t Lose Yourself” from that record, but it’s all the better for it as this is a gentler, acoustic-folk record that’s layered with strings and horns — and most importantly, Veirs’ lovely vocals absolutely shine and take center stage.

Upon my first listen, I’m pretty sure I listened to the title track “July Flame” about ten consecutive times, though, I tend to be a bit obsessive over songs that I enjoy.  It’s truly a gorgeous album that I’m sure will find significant growth as 2010 grinds along,

July Flame is set to be released on January 12th via Raven Marching Band Records.  If you visit her website, you can sign up to receive two free tracks from the album.
