The Twilight Sad :: “Reflection of the Television”

A lot of us here at TYS are pretty big supporters of Glasgow’s The Twilight Sad. Both their self-titled EP and subsequent 2007 debut Fourteen Autumns, Fifteen Winters were absolutely fantastic. I may be copying exactly what I said a few years ago in the following sentences, but I feel the description to still manages to hold sway in conveying their music. Listening to The Twilight Sad is like going back in time to where the emotions of adolescence reigned supreme. Feelings of love, heartbreak and dreams of a more promising youth. It suits their music well as they begin slow and end on an epic note with soaring guitars similar to that of the more modern post-rock heavyweights.
Pitchfork premiered a new song along with the announcement of the band’s sophomore record titled Forget the Night Ahead. I also hope no one agrees with their assessment of the group by calling them “Scottish emo,” which just sounds awful. Anyways, “Reflection of the Television” is the name of the song, and is a welcome change from their tradition of unnecessarily long song titles. It’s a slow moving track, with a hard hitting bassline and a lingering MBV-style of guitar strumming. Of course, the heavy vocals of James Graham remain the constant standout and gives the song it’s identity. His heavy Scottish accent may be a turnoff, but it suits the music well. Looking forward to hearing what the new record has in store for us.

Can’t wait for this album. FA&FW was one of my favorites of 2007 (still is!), so this is high on my ‘must-hear’ list.
