I picked up Akron/Family’s debut a few years back, gave it a few listens and forgot about it, and I’ll confess that I let their other releases slip by unnoticed. But recently I gave the track “River” a listen and it made me realize I was missing out. The band’s latest disc, Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free, is an all-over-the-place good time. The opening track, “Everyone is Guilty,” sets the stage, with a blend of psychedelic classic rock and funk guitars, and the craziness continues from there. Each track is a little unpredictable, but to me the album never seems like a mess, just a band talented and crazy enough to pull it off. “River,” which I’ve posted below, is another highlight, which leaves the album a little front-loaded, but the album is pretty solid throughout. But, with how much music I listen to, it’s great to be a little surprised now and then, and for that I thank Akron/Family and this enjoyable album.
