Michel Gondry to release new video compilation tomorrow on DVD

I was reminded of the The Director’s Label series a few weeks ago when I randomly came across the Spike Jonze DVD while digging through my closet. The DVD collection — which was co-owned by Michel Gondry — was released in 2003 and initially started with three different volumes which included Jonze, Gondry, and Chris Cunningham. I never paid much attention to the series after that point, even though it continued once again in 2005 when four more volumes were released. I assume since there has yet to be another release since then that the series is now officially dead. Then again, I don’t think I can remember any music video directors that have been nearly as influencial in the past couple of years.
Starting tomorrow, Michel Gondry will be releasing a DVD called, Michel Gondry 2: More Videos Before & After DVD 1, on the director’s website, which will act as more of an unofficial follow-up to his own Director’s Label DVD from 2003. It will feature videos from artists which include Beck’s “Cellphone’s Dead,” Paul McCartney’s “Dance Tonight,” The White Stripes’ “The Denial Twist,” and Radiohead’s “Knives Out,” — which according to The Playlist, actually has a bit of history to it as the band apparently hated the video at the time and wouldn’t allow it on the original Director’s Label DVD.
“I showed [Thom Yorke] a storyboard and every single detail: he was completely excited and happy for it – and then, it turned out, they all criticize me for being selfish and putting my own views on it and my own introspection,” Gondry said, peeved in a 2004 interview. “And they didn’t let me use my video for my DVD! And I’m really mad at them for having done that to me, that they abuse their power! It did not go smooth, but if it went smooth, it would be mediocre.”
I’ve always wondered why that video never made the cut for the initial DVD. Despite all of the ill will towards it from Radiohead, I still consider it a fantastic video; which seemed to also fit the band’s persona perfectly at the time.
