emmy-the-greatFor myself, the wait for Emmy the Great’s debut album First Love, has only been a little over a year.  But for many more long-time fans, the wait has been what I imagine is a more excruciating three or four years.

Throughout the short time that i’ve known of this Hong Kong-born, now London-based musician, i’ve accrued almost a laundry lists worth of demos, EPs, live tracks, etc. in anticipation of this debut, which i’m sure will satisfy many folks once it’s released on February 3rd via Rough Trade.

Usually this route can have negative results.  For instance, the Cold War Kids debut, which only contained songs from their two EPs and didn’t offer any kind of new material.  Sure, they were re-recorded for that extra level of polish, but as far as I was concerned, that new car scent had already diminished.  After combing over the tracklist for First Love, I anticipated this very same predicament, but at first glance only recognized less than a handful of songs, which means i’ll be gladly looking forward to more than half of the album being new material.

I’ve yet to hear any of these songs, outside of the single “We Almost Had a Baby,” which was released late last year.  But listening to so many acoustic singer-songwriters, it’s always difficult to try and distinguish one from the other, but hopefully Emmy the Great manages to distance herself from the pack with this debut.

Someone posted Canopies and Grapes and a live version of Two Steps Forward like a year ago and I have loved them, but everything since then has been disappointing.
