I don’t know about any of you, but the release of the 4th album from Doves is without a doubt my most anticipated album of 2009.  It seems the years since the release of Some Cities may have made the band irrelevant to most, but Jimi, Andy and Jez still have yet to disappoint me.  In fact, they’re one of, if not the only British band I was listening to in high school that i’m not completely embarrassed with here in the present.

So here we are, finally, with a glimpse into the forthcoming record Kingdom of Rust, as an exclusive download of the track “Jetstream” was made available yesterday on the band’s website.  Of course, I downloaded it as soon as it was made available, but didn’t listen to it until a couple hours later.  It’s as if I was almost afraid to listen to it, out of a fear of some kind of massive disappointment.  There has been absolutely no end to the amount of bands that i’ve listened to over the past 10 years that haven’t delivered with recent offerings.

I started to remember the very first time I heard the lead singles from the previous albums, and how much of an immediate impact those had.  Listening to “There Goes the Fear” from The Last Broadcast as I type this, and this song still provides as much excitement right now as the very first moments of hearing it back in 2002.

With new bands seemingly finding success every other month, and the notion that music has changed so much in the past few years, it’s always a pleasure to come back to something so familiar.  I’m not going to voice my opinion on this new single, but I just wanted to make clear how important I think this band is.  I’m hoping that they can continue explore new ideas with the new record, and prove that even after 10 years, they can continue to get better with each release.

I’m a Doves fan, but I count myself more of a U2 fan. So here’s where I compare, because both bands have new releases coming out within a month of each other. The first single from U2, ‘Get on Your Boots’ hasn’t impressed me. I don’t want to really hum it or play it. Isn’t that what you OUGHT to want to do with music? So, I was deflated a bit by the first-off single from U2’s ‘No Line on the Horizon.’

Now came word that Doves was on the way with a new release themselves, called ‘Kingdom of Rust.’ I got an e-mail from ‘the band’ a few weeks ago and immediately headed over to their web site to grab ‘Jetstream.’ You may have a reluctance to comment on it, but I will: What a catchy piece! And yes, I hum it and play it! I love it! And a week later I was pointed to a link having the first-ever radio play of the title track, ‘Kingdom of Rust.’ OMG…I am so blown away. It is GORGEOUS! I hum this and play this even more than ‘Jetstream.’

To say that I am looking forward more to Doves new album than U2’s is something I don’t think I’d ever admit to, but here I am. If there’s an ounce of energy at the Doves’ record label, they should be pushing this new album for a Grammy. True, I’ve only heard two songs. But when was the last time that you genuinely LOVED the first two songs from an album?

I hope ‘Kingdom of Rust’ is every bit the smash that followers hope it is. When the band comes to Boston, I will happily drive south from New Hampshire to see them.

I cant agree with last poster, i am also a massive u2 fan and doves/radiohead second, but i was a wee bit dissapointed with the u2 single, however im nor panicking yet, im sure the album will be great. Anyway, back to the point, Doves i reckon are the most inderrated band in the world, they continue to get better with each album and the two new songs have blown my mind already, im so excited about this album, there isnt even a tiny sense of worry that it wont live up to my huge expectations! Well i have dovesfan in both my email addresses and im proud to be a long time fan of this amazing band. :)

Honestly, Doves are INCREDIBLY underrated. They have an amazing body of work in their first 3 albums. They shouldn’t be looped into groups with other here and gone Brit-pop bands– I’m sure their next album will be amazing.

I haven’t been so excited about a new release since Sgt Peppers and Dark Side of the Moon (ok I’m showing my age here). I caught them live at Glastonbury in 2005 and they blew me away. They are rumoured to be playing Glastonbury this year but just in case I’ve got tickets to see them next month in London. Jetstream and Kingdom of Rust are fab.

I would say at this point U2s cd is somewhat better than the new doves. I donot believe that U2 has released a classic U2 cd but its still miles above most of the so called modern music. As far as kingdom of Rust I kind of feel the same its a good cd just not great.
