Sometimes the term “mixtape” can be misleading. Usually, I hear the word and think of a DJ’s mix of the latest club hits or a free hip-hop download. This week, on the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised by something completely different. Decomposure, aka Canadian electronic wizard Caleb Mueller, has offered up a free “mixtape” called Humidity Patient Guide. The 50 minute mix is an assortment of tracks he has worked on, along with his vocals, and the styles he covers are all over the place. One minute things are mellow and ambient, the next it’s like an Anathallo chorus, the next it’s more akin to Postal Service pop before becoming rapid-fire rap a la Why?. And, perhaps even better, this mix served as a window for me to a great musician, because I can now say that his most recent full-length, Vertical Lines A, is also excellent. So, if you have a little patience and feel like having it rewarded today, I’d go download the Humidity Patient Guide, and maybe even donate a few bucks to this great artist while you’re there.
Here’s one little excerpt from the mix:

Thank you! I was wondering when he was releasing a new album.
OK I had to post again. I’m supposed to be out running right now, but I can’t tear away from this album. It’s incredible! I took on the project of splitting it up into individual tracks. Thanks for stealing my afternoon
Haha… the question for me would be this: How do you decide where to split up the tracks?
Cool, some parts of this song reminded me of St. Vincents musical elements.
