Boy Eats Drum Machine – Boomboxxx

I’ll be completely honest- when I first received Boy Eat Drum Machine’s Boomboxxx, I found a lot I liked and some I didn’t. More than anything, I loved Jon Ragel’s crate-digging beats and mixes, which have some echoes of DJ Shadow’s work. On the other hand, at first it seemed that his voice didn’t fit with the music in some way, probably because I’m used to hearing a more soul-inflected voice with this kind of music. But, a few listens later, it all clicked and I can now say Boomboxxx is one of my favorite DIY albums this year. The melodies stick, the beats are great, and each listen makes me like it a little more, which is a good sign. There are a few tracks I’m not in love with, but the best moments more than make up for it.
