The Vivian Girls are a band i’ve wanted to cover here on the blog for quite some time now, but for some reason or another it just hasn’t happened yet. Not that I haven’t been enjoying them throughout the past couple of months, as I have been listening to their two 7 inches and their self-titled LP that quickly sold out of its initial 500 pressings. The sound is noisy and a bit raw; though, with just enough of that sweet pop sensibility that tips the odds in their favor. We’re certainly not the first people to talk about these gals from Brooklyn, and we definitely won’t be the last.
For me, it seems like a great time to be listening to bands like the Vivian Girls, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and The Manhattan Love Suicides, since it’s almost feels as if we’re currently in the midst of some sort of C86 revival. And I can only hope that this sort of things opens people’s eyes to a lot of more great bands like Black Tambourine and The Shop Assistants, who are just a few that the Vivian Girls have been often compared to.
Those of whom that missed out on that sold out LP are in luck, as it will be available once again next week on In The Red. They also recently recorded a live session at WFMU, which you can download over at their site. They’re also currently on a massive tour, which will more than likely stop by somewhere near you. I actually just missed my chance of seeing them in Atlanta, but this is the sort of thing that happens when you don’t have a job!

I got the chance to see them back in August in a venue that has the capacity of 150 people, max. It was pretty fun. Also, when one of the patrons of your show in a venue that small is Geologist from Animal Collective, you’ve pretty much been given a rather hefty silent endorsement.
