Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has always created an interesting mix of classical and electronic aesthetics. His latest album, Fordlandia, follows his tendency to meld electronic textures into melodic classical music, and in that way is continuing what he’s always been doing. However, on this album I feel that technology is making a subtler appearance, bolstering the sound when necessary without intruding like I felt it did occasionally on his last disc, IBM 1401 – A User’s Manual. The end result in an album of gentle sounds you can get lost in for an hour, with slow builds to euphoric washes of strings… it might be enough to convince a Luddite that technology can be good after all. Here’s a taste with his track “The Rocket Builder.” The full album is out November 3 via 4AD. Enjoy!
