When it comes to great pop, people usually look to Sweden, and for good reason. But after hearing Les PhilippesOdisea Ultramarina (High Seas Odyssey), I’ll be keeping my eye on Spain as well. These guys obviously love the British Invasion sound, but their songs are good enough to keep it from ever sounding overly nostalgic. From start to finish, the album is a run of great pop with melodies that stick. And, for those who speak Spanish, the lyrics are interesting as well… and for those of you who don’t, the melodies are good enough for you not to worry too much about not understanding. For a taste of what’s on this summery little album, check out “Philippe Aronnax,” a wonderful musing on the virtues of life under the sea. If you dig this track, Odisea Ultramarina is definitely worth picking up. Enjoy!
