Curumin, a.k.a. Luciano Nakata Albuquerque, is a Brazilian-born musician of Japanese/Spanish ancestry, so when his music is as globe-spanning as his roots, it’s not surprising. With one foot firmly in his home of Brazil, Curumin grabs bits of sound from hip-hop, jazz, funk, and electronica and blends them with smooth guitar lines and mellow vocals. His second disc, JapanPopShow, is out October 7 on Quannum Projects, and it’s a solid disc for anyone looking for some good sounds from the Southern Hemisphere. The sonic pastiche jumps around from song to song, sometimes sounding like a chill afternoon in Rio and other times like a DJ Shadow instrumental, with a little bit of everything in between. For a taste of what’s on the disc, here’s an mp3 of “Compacto,” and ode to lp records. It’s a great track, and yet another reminder I need to learn Portuguese! Enjoy!
