One of my biggest regrets about going to high school in Tucson is that I didn’t hear about Calexico until after I had moved away. Their mix of folk, rock, and Latin music encapsulates Tucson’s feel perfectly, and I would still love to see them play live in their hometown. But, in the meantime, I can stick to their albums.

Last we heard from Calexico, on Garden Ruin, they had focused a bit more on the indie folk side of their sound and the Latin sounds were not as present as before. The results were still solid, but those of us that have been listening to Calexico craved more mariachi horns and verses in Spanish. Perhaps sensing this, Calexico have kept all the songcraft of their previous efforts and have restored the great Latin touch throughout their new album, Carried to Dust. The result is an album that fits up next to Feast of Wire and other Calexico greats, and along with Okkervil River’s new disc will provide for a great day of music on Tuesday when the two come out. For now, enjoy “Two Silver Trees,” the first single off of the album.

I just moved from Austin to Tucson and excited to finally get a chance to see them live here (think Sept. 20th at Club Congress).

So far, I’m loving this new record, not as great as their earlier work, but always solid.
