Kind of a short week for releases once again, but there are a couple of new albums to take a look at nonetheless.  One album I definitely recommend is former Mojave 3/Slowdive frontman Neil Halstead’s second solo album, Oh! Mighty Engine.  Also out this week is the full-length We have cause to Be Uneasy from Wild Sweet Orange, who happen to make their home in nearby Birmingham, Alabama.  Considering the group is from my own state, you’re probably asking why I haven’t mentioned them here on the blog before.  I honestly don’t know why I haven’t, though frankly, their music doesn’t really suit my tastes too well.  Anything else out this week that you can recommend?

Dead Heart Bloom :: Fall In
MP3: “Our Last Martyr”
(the entire EP is available for free download)

The Great Northwest :: Widespread Reign of The Great Northwest
MP3: “Chief John”

James Jackson Toth :: Waiting in Vain
MP3: “Look in on Me”
MP3: “Doreen”
MP3: “Beulah the Good”

Neil Halstead :: Oh! Mighty Engine
MP3: “Paint a Face”
MP3: “Queen Bee”

The Walkmen :: You & Me
MP3: “In the New Year”
available only as digital download

Wild Sweet Orange :: We Have Cause to Be Uneasy
MP3: “10 Dead Dogs”

The Daily Graboid is great. The Yahoo Media Player is great. But the songs are very male oriented. Don’t you like women singers? Also, shouldn’t the feature be called The Weekly Graboid? Thanks for Yellow Stereo. — Stu Borman

Stu- Trust me, we all can go pretty crazy about female singers, and especially boy-girl pop… Just keep your eyes open, and you’ll see! :)

I can’t help that the releases this week are all male oriented Stu. Yeah, the ‘Daily’ part doesn’t really indicate the weekly function of the post, but it’s what i’ve been using for two years now, so it’s kinda stuck and has a nice ring to it.

Pretty solid debut by James Jackson Toth. Can’t say I was familiar with the ‘Wooden Wand’, but I like the mix of country, folk, blues and soul on ‘Waiting In Vain’. Good choice of MP3s here, which give a cross-section of the styles on the album. ‘Look In on Me’ is spooky in the way it seems to conjure the ghost of John Lennon, while ‘Doreen’ reminds me of Chris Isaak, in a good way. Enjoying the blog, will be back.
