Broken Social Scene Presents: Brendan Canning – Something For All Of Us…
Posted by PJ in The Yellow Stereo, Upcoming
It’s funny how I went from pure excitement over this ‘Broken Social Scene Presents’ series, to pretty much forgetting about the whole thing entirely after last year’s inaugural entry from Kevin Drew. That being said, no surprise that the announcement of bassist Brendan Canning’s debut quietly went through one ear and out the other. Come to think of it — it wouldn’t surprise me if a slight percentage of folks wouldn’t even know who Canning even is without the Broken Social Scene moniker attached. That could kind of be to the album’s advantage, as Something For All Of Us… positively strays far from the typical BSS canon, as opposed to Drew’s Spirit If…, which carried the torch in an almost “Been there, done that” kind-of lackluster fashion.
I’m only listening to this album now, considering it found itself with an early digital release on Arts & Crafts, due in part to an unmastered copy leaking unto the internet last month. When I first heard “Hit The Wall,” I had no idea that this was actually Brendan Canning; so color me shocked to find out only minutes afterwards. The first thing that struck me upon hearing this song is just the pulsing energy and drive that it contains. It’s the exactly the sort of thing that initially drew me to BSS in the first place, and hopefully this is a first glance of what’s to come with the full album.
Expect the retail copy of Something For All Of Us… to hit on July 22. As usual, members of Broken Social Scene will make appearances, along with a few other guests — including Land Of Talk front-woman, Elizabeth Powell.
