I’ve been listening to Panda Riot since discovering them earlier this year, but for some odd reason (laziness) I haven’t mentioned them here at all. Time to rectify that, as there are two very good reasons to do so: 1.) They’re playing at Athens Popfest this year. 2.) They recently performed a live session for WOXY’s Lounge Act.
What initially drew me to this Chicago three-piece is the obvious shoegaze influence that’s all over their record, She Dares All Things. Sure, the obvious names always seem to come up when you even hint at the word shoegaze in describing any new band (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, etc.), but one thing that I admire about a lot of these new bands that delve into this territory is how they’re taking shoegaze and melding it into their own unique sound. In the case of Panda Riot, they’ve simply created some beautiful shoegaze pop, and that’s good enough for me.
Check out the WOXY session for some interesting info on how the the group initially started, along with an awesome cover of M.I.A’s “Paper Planes.”
