Back when I used Audiogalaxy, I had all but written off hip-hop. One day I stumbled upon an obscure little group called Sonic Sum, and realized there really was good hip-hop out there, I just had to look for it. It opened a door for me, and in the process of discovering all sorts of stuff I didn’t even know existed, I kind of forgot about Sonic Sum, until recently.
Sonic Sum only have two albums, and the second, Films, was actually recorded back in 2004 (it’s been available in Japan). Stateside, Def Jux has picked it up and released it this year, and I saw the name and remembered the tracks from Sonic Sum’s first album that turned me on to hip-hop in the first place. After checking this album out, I remember what it was that made me pay attention- the intelligent production and stream-of-consciousness lyrics. This is an album of hip-hop that brings to mind wandering an empty urban area after midnight, with beats that bump without ever reaching party levels and flows that raise a lot more questions than answers. I can’t guarantee most of TYS’s readers will dig it, but I’m sure there are some more out there like me who find this to be a good dose of indie hip-hop.
