The official news regarding Sigur Rós’ fifth studio album was announced in a big way yesterday, as the band released a free download of the first single, “Gobbledigook,” (yes, that’s the actual title) off the forthcoming album titled Me Su í Eyrum Vi Spilum Endalaust. I will not even attempt to try and pronounce that, which makes me thankful that I only have to type it out. If you were curious, the english translates to “With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly.”
I didn’t get a chance to download this one myself until the late afternoon, since the website’s servers were obviously overloaded with fans anxiously trying to listen to this as well. Once I was finally able to download the song, I was quite shocked at what I was hearing. After seeing the little in-studio clips of the group working on what seemed like some very epic sounding songs, I was pretty much expecting to hear something along those lines with this new single.
I could not have been more incorrect, as the single takes everything you know about Sigur Rós and tosses it on it’s head. Gone are those familiar waves of feedback, the hauntingly gorgeous sounds that we’ve come to know and love from Jónsi’s guitar/violin bow, everything takes a backseat as the driving beat that begins on “Gobbledigook” reminded me a bit of The Dodos, if you want a more recent comparison.
Say what you will about the new song, though, but I can’t wait for this album to be released. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long, as the new album is set to be released on June 24. I’m just hoping that the band makes its way to the southeast on their tour sometime this year. Also, the single’s very NSFW video is also available for your viewing pleasure. When I say NSFW, I really mean this.

This song really surprised me… but I like it and am stoked about another Sigur Ros album… hopefully they come back to the states once they’ve finished that monster European tour they’re doing…
This new track is indeed a shock for longtime Sigur Ros fans. I feel like it still retains just enough of their signature sound to give that comfortable familiarity while totally throwing us all for a loop.
