Singer songwriters are everywhere. Look under a log, and another one is probably springing up. It makes it hard to find the good ones sometimes, and sometimes the saturation of the market leads me to pass on some good singer songwriters when I first hear them. One of these singer songwriters is Matthew Ryan, who doesn’t break the mold but has talent and an engaging voice that kind of reminds me of Josh Rouse but instrumentation in a more down-to-earth alt-country vein, like Josh Ritter. I didn’t pay too much to his latest album, Matthew Ryan vs. the Silver State, when I first received it, but I’ve come around. Ryan can go it alone with his acoustic, or bring in his backing band, the Silver State, but the result is the same- solid singer-songwriter music with solid lyrics and solid melodies. Maybe you feel like your available slots for acoustic singer songwriters are all full (like I often feel), but if you think you have an opening, give Matthew Ryan a shot.
