Intro: My name is Andie East and I’ve been reading The Yellow Stereo for about a year and finally quit lurking and took up the call to contributing. Favorite album of the moment, The Dodos, Visitor.

MAN MAN w/ Yeasayer
I do believe that Man Man is one of the greatest live shows ever. This in light of the fact I obviously was not around for David Bowie’s Thin White Duke show or his Ziggy Stardust from Mars tour.

Yeasayer was on when we got to the show. Great American was packed, mainly because last time Yeasayer played they sold out and I missed out on tickets. Although I’ve never really gotten into the album, I’ve heard repeatedly that it is awesome and if their live show is anything to go by, the album should be excellent. They really seemed like a band that was ready for a bigger venue, with a rotating light show in the back, reflecting images that sometimes reminded me of the screen saver on your computer, and sometimes a music documentary video. Chris Keating has an strong and compelling voice and the comparisons to David Byrne are accurate. Unfortunately the vocals were a bit lost and I got distracted by the dizzy lava lamp light show.

I’ve seen Man Man four times now and I have to say this was time blew the others away. They are full of a viral energy and they infected the audience. SF crowds are notorious for standing around as if they are watching a poker tournament instead of a live band. This crowd was jumping up and down, spontaneously dancing and non-stop screaming at Man Man, who played a great mix of crowd favorites and dynamic songs off their new album, Rabbit Habbits. Honus Honus was at the top of his game, pogo’ing around onstage, playing bizzarre instruments such as a hose that squealed, a multi-kazoo, a funnel and at one point I saw a rubber snake being whipped in the air, to some musical intent.

If you are anywhere near an upcoming Man Man w/ Yeasayer show in the next few weeks, make it a point to attend. There’s no way you will regret it.

Visiter is amazing and so are Man Man and Yeasayer. I had class when they came to Chicago, so I was sad about that. When I saw Yeasayer with MGMT in February, Chris Keating was going crazy and smashed his hand on that mangled cymbal and tore it up and it was gushing blood. Beautiful stuff. I’m also glad Man Man is as awesome live as their recorded stuff sounds like they should be.

Oh, you have to go to Man Man asap. They will set your feet on fire.

In all seriousness, I probably should have been fired three times.

  5. Pablo says:

Fired multiple times? How do you swing that?

  6. Val says:

Visiter is actually my favorite album of the moment as well. The Dodos are really legit and amazingly talented guys.
