Well, I’ve loved me some Palo Santo over the last couple of years, and now I’m glad to see that Shearwater will be back this year with Rook. It’s due June 3 via Matador Records, but of course we wouldn’t want to wait that long for some kind of sampling of the album. If the promotional art for the album were all we had to go by, I would be stoked- it’s that perfect blend of beautiful and haunting that I’ve come to love from Shearwater’s music, and it has the continuation of the bird theme on quite a few of their album covers. But the titular track is where the saliva really starts flowing- it’s a slow-burning track with a great melody and a majestic horn line that comes in at just the right time. It manages to feel kind of post-apocalyptic and hopeful at the same time, which is no small feat. I’m hoping the other nine tracks on Rook are on this level, and I have a feeling they will be.
