I’ll be quite honest, for a very long time I had completely fallen asleep on Victoria Bergsman’s post-Concretes project, Taken By Trees. It’s unfortunate because by the time I had finally given Open Field my complete attention towards the end of 2007, I was knocked out at the realization of how sweet and charming this album was. One that I will admit was one of 2007′s most criminally overlooked albums.

With all that out of the way, it’s time to put the spotlight back on her once again as she recently put up drop-dead gorgeous cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” I have no idea how many times i’ve listened to this thing on her myspace, but I just love the hell out of it. All of the guitar melodies of the original are just an afterthought, as this cover is piano-driven and handled so delicately with Bergsman’s fragile voice. It’s absolutely stunning, and probably one of the best covers you will hear this year.

Along with streaming the song on Taken By Trees’ myspace, you can purchase it here for $1.50 digitally or $3.00 on vinyl.

“Stunning” is not a word that springs to mind when describing Taken by Trees overtly subdued & frankly inescapably boring music style. At best it is tender & pretty. “fallen asleep” is correct as that is exactly what this band makes me do everytime I hear their music. *yawn*
