I am seriously loving everything i’ve heard from Thao Nguyen’s new record, We Brave Bee Stings And All, her label debut that will be out later this month on Kill Rock Stars. It seems she’s also going the Sondre Lerche route (with the Faces Down Quartet) as she’s employed a full rhythm section with her band The Get Down Stay Down.
I remember hearing about the Virginia-born 23-year-old back in mid-2006, and though a lot of her sound at time was really stripped down acoustic, the new album showcases lots of different instruments and a more upbeat and happier pop sound. In particular, check out “Beat (Health, Life And Fire) where that electric guitar comes in around the middle of the song, and the horns near the end. Really loving that song and how all those instruments come together. Her voice kinda reminds me a little bit of Cat Power and Laura Veirs, agree?
We Brave Bee Stings And All is due out on the 29th, I highly recommend you pick this one up! Her 2005 debut, Like The Linen, is also worth checking out as well.
