Hey everyone, Paul (PJ) here. I want to introduce a very special guest, Tim of Baby Got Books, as he’s guest posting about a special event happening next week on the 23rd in Decatur, GA.

mixtape.jpgGreetings, Yellow Stereo-ers. My name is Tim, and I’m the editor of an Atlanta-based group book blog called Baby Got Books. We’re trying to get the word out about a brand new reading series that we’re working to get off the ground. Our hope is to create the kind of book events that you’d want to tell your friends about. Many thanks to Paul for inviting me over to tell you about it.

The Baby Got Books Reading Series kicks off next Wednesday night (1/23) with Rolling Stone writer/contributing editor Rob Sheffield who will be reading from his excellent memoir, Love is a Mix Tape. The book tells the fairy tale story of how Sheffield, a skinny shy kid, met the outgoing and beautiful Renee, fell in love, and got married. Except Renee had a brain aneurysm and died just as their lives were getting started. Sheffield’s wit and natural story telling ability keep the tale from turning into the maudlin pap that it might have turned into in lesser hands. It’s a powerful story told with wit, charm, sadness, hope, and raw emotion. Each chapter of their story begins with a cassette play list from a box of tapes that the couple made for one another over the course of their life together. The play lists and songs serve as a springboard to Sheffield’s past and happier days. If you’ve ever been transported backwards in time to a specific place/event by a piece of music, then this book will be right up your alley. It is a love letter to the power of music. (You can read our original reviews of the book here and here).

Following Rob Sheffield’s reading will be a live performance by Atlanta band The Swear who will be releasing their debut full length later this year. Just so we’re clear: In keeping with our goal of universal awesomeness, The Swear will not be playing chamber music. The band will be fully “plugged” and will be bringing their unique blend of literate and punk-informed pop rawk to the stage.

“The Sleep Inside” :: The Swear

The reading will be held at Wordsmiths Books in Decatur, GA (Google Maps). Wordsmiths is located just off Decatur Square and is one block from the Decatur MARTA station. The evening is FREE, and FREE drinks will be provided. If you don’t have the book yet, be sure to support our favorite indie book store by picking up a copy of the book there. Did we mention that the evening is free?

If you make it to the reading, be sure to say find me and say hello.

Thanks for having me over, Paul.

I’m really hoping i’m able to make it to this next week. For those that haven’t read this yet, I highly recommend you read it now. I finished reading this in one day, and the effect it’s had on me runs deep. Completely honest and heartbreaking; with a passion and love for music that cannot be touched.
