Lightspeed Champion :: Falling Off The Lavender Bridge
Posted by PJ in The Yellow Stereo, Upcoming
An album i’m really looking forward to picking up next next week is Falling Off The Lavender Bridge from Lightspeed Champion (aka Devonte Hynes). Over the past week or so, i’ve had the song “Tell Me What Its Worth” on constant repeat, as it’s probably one of the first really great pop songs i’ve heard so far this year. Great songwriting, catchy melodies and adorable backing vocals from Emmy The Great, really make this the type of song that you can’t help but repeat over and over again.
For those not familiar, Hynes was formerly a member of the UK band Test Icicles. I’ve never heard of them before, but checked them out for myself, and eh…not so good. Thankfully for us, Hynes’ new moniker took a new direction when in 2007, he recorded his debut record with Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis. Along with Mogis, a number of Omaha-based musicans also make appearances on the record to create a sound that delves somewhat deep into the alt-country realm, but overall, still retains it’s pop sensibilities.
In support of record, Hynes will be touring through North America, including a few stops at SXSW. The album is due out Feb. 5th on Domino.

Really getting into Lightspeed Champion…really good stuff. Dry Lips is my fav song so far. Looking forward to catching him a couple times in NY (although they are supposed to be “acoustic” shows…wonder if that’s better, worse or the same).
(*And i think the March 8th date is at Union Pool now)
