To be honest, I am only really awed by a new album a few times a year, and I guess I’ve just been awed for the first time this year. Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat’s voice sucked me in immediately as I listened to her debut album, Oh, My Darling, and it didn’t let me go until 40 minutes later as the album drew to a close. The album fits into the genre of acoustic folk-pop, but it’s just so well done that I wanted more right away. Her voice has the power of Cat Power or Feist, but fits into a gentler groove that complements the string-accented guitar strums and piano touches. As I listened to Oh, My Darling, I really had no desire to do anything but absorb the beautiful music.

I know as well as anyone that there have been a lot of big female singer-songwriters lately, and to some it may sound like just another entry to the genre. But I really thing Basia Bulat has something special here, something where all of the pieces click just right to give us something really worth listening to. The album is out February 5, and he just posted her first music video on her news page. I’ve posted two tracks that, to me, really sum up what she’s all about… Enjoy!

“In the Night” :: Basia Bulat

“Snakes and Ladders” :: Basia Bulat
