I meant to mention this as soon as I got home on Wednesday night, but for some odd reason I passed out as soon as I stepped into my apartment. The reading with Rob Sheffield was fantastic, and was my very first time visiting Wordsmiths Books in Decatur, GA. Special thanks to Rich at Cable & Tweed for answering my frantic phone call for directions, as I couldn’t seem to find the bookstore no matter how many times I drove up and down E. Trinity Place. I swear, I must’ve past by Wordsmiths about ten times before I found the little banner that I could barely make out because it was so dark.

The event, the first of hopefully many in the Baby Got Books Reading Series, had a surprisingly large gathering of people show up in support. We all sat in metal chairs in front of a tiny stage to listen to Sheffield read from a few chapters in the book (“Sheena was a Man” and “Roller Boogie”) along with some witty commentary in between. He actually had some family attend, as apparently his sister currently lives in Atlanta.

I had also had a chance to meet Sheffield after he finished his short reading, as a line started to have books signed by him. As I stood next to the guy, I couldn’t believe how tall this man was. I felt like a little child as he bent over to listen to what I had to say, though it’s all good because he was so friendly to everyone and very appreciative.

Before I left to drive back home, I had a few drinks with Beth from Cup of Coffey and Tim from Baby Got Books. Both were great to be around and I had such a wonderful time hanging out with them. If only all nights could be that fun. I highly recommend you check out both of their blogs for a better recap of the night.

I also made a little mix based off the songs used in Sheffield’s book Love is A Mix Tape. It definitely has a 90s feel to it for the most part, as Sheffield describes it as his favorite decade in music.

“Thirteen” :: Big Star

“The Best Days” :: The Softies

“Talk About The Passion” :: R.E.M.

“Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah” :: The Wedding Present

“More Than This” :: Roxy Music

“Your Woman” :: White Town

“The Summer” :: Yo La Tengo

“Sugartune” :: Sloan

“Regret” :: New Order

“Slow Dog” :: Belly

“Everything Flows” :: Teenage Fanclub

“Shoot The Singer” :: Pavement
