I apologize for the complete lack of posts this week, as i’ve just been really busy as my sister is currently in town. Anyways, I meant to post this review last week, but I had to buy a new usb cable to upload my crappy pictures. I seriously have what feels like an archaic camera and a five-second flash just doesn’t cut the mustard anymore.
Last Friday night’s show of Nicole Atkins and The Pipettes was absolutely fantastic and the first time in months that I had been to Atlanta for a show. I’ve actually never been to the Vinyl before and I was a bit nervous because I actually thought we were there on the wrong day because their sign had the date set for the next night. Thankfully, everything went smoothly as my friend and I got in just in time to see the opening band who’s name I can’t remember for the life of me. They had an interesting sound, but I just wasn’t digging the lead singer at all. Imagine the guy from The Hives fronting some 60’s pop band. Yeah, not good at all.

Nicole Atkins on the other hand, was fantastic as she was accompanied by her band The Sea. I knew from listening to her recently released album and her EP that she had an incredible voice, but just witnessing it in person was definitely an engaging experience. She primarily played songs from Neptune City, which are so much better to hear in a live setting as the songs aren’t weighed down by the horrid production seen on the studio versions. Considering how packed the venue was, I was curious as to how many were there to see her since she can currently be seen on an American Express commercial and having the backing of a major label. Regardless, she’s an amazing talent and I would definitely jump at chance to see her perform again.

Her set definitely raised the bar high and I was anxious to see if The Pipettes could exceed my expectations. I’ve wanted to see them perform for almost a year now and it was nice to finally see experience all of those great songs in person. First though, I want to say how refreshing it is to see a band just bang out a slew of two minute pop songs. There is nothing that I hate more than hearing songs that drag out more than they really should. There was none of that with The Pipettes, as they started off strong with “Dance and Boogie” (I think?) and continued with a very high energy set. The music is just so infectious that you can’t help but sing along, even though 90% of the songs are about problems with guys. Also, not to be ignored are their backing band the Cassettes, as they were fantastic as well.
Not much else to say really, but did I mention that all three of the girls are super cute?! They obviously know this too since the last song they played contained the lyrics “If you haven’t noticed yet, we’re the prettiest girls you’ve ever met.” They’re still the only group that this blog has ever interviewed, but it’s one that you will never see since the guy who interviewed Gwenno (who dyed her hair) was some emo douchebag that didn’t want to let me post the damn thing.
