Jens Lekman @ The Drunken Unicorn :: 11/16/07

Friday night at the Drunken Unicorn was the place to be, as Jens Lekman provided a night full of laughs, smiles and all around happiness. I had a feeling that the venue was going to be loaded and that definitely proved true as the sheer number of people packed into the very warm show floor opposed to the frigid temperatures that continued outside. It was almost a relief to finally get inside as the doors didn’t open until around 8:45 – 9:00 as I think the doors were originally supposed to open fifteen minutes earlier if i’m correct.
This was the very first time that I had been able to see Jens perform. Prior to that, I couldn’t tell you how many stories i’ve heard of how amazing his shows are. There’s no way that I could not be excited anxious to finally see him on stage for myself after hearing all of this. Though it was only a solo set, he still managed to get everyone excited with the work of his acoustic guitar and some help from some sample recording tools (dunno what they’re called). There’s just something about his personality that just grabbed the entire audience. Maybe it’s the way that he would tell stories in between each song or his wonderful sense of humor. Whatever it was, we were eating up everything he had to give us.
As much as I would’ve loved to see him with a full band, to be honest, he didn’t really need it as the crowd provided everything you could ask for from the enthusiastic handclapping to the screaming the choruses for a majority of the songs. It was so much fun and i’ve never been so comfortable at a show to sing along. For instance, during “Sweet Summer’s Night on Hammer Hill” where the (bum-ba-bum-ba-bum-ba-bum) continued to ring louder as the song played through. “I don’t want this night to end,” Jens said, as he came out for two encores before the set finally came to an end. I think it’s safe to say that we didn’t want the night to end either.

It really was a great show. One of the funnest times I’ve had at a show in Atlanta. Something about him just made me happy all weekend.

An awesome, awesome show. I liked his little intro & commentary on Nina, especially.
