This was certainly an exciting email to read last night, as it easily stood out while sifting through the almost never-ending piles of that I receive everyday. It may seem like another duo to add to the list, but Hello, Blue Roses is an intriguing one as it includes Dan Bejar, who we all know is no stranger to different music projects, and his partner Sydney Vermont. A “sweetheart duo” as it’s referred to in the press release.

The 13-track self-titled debut will be released on January 22, 2008 by Chicago-based label Locust Music. I’ve listened to this first single “Shadow Falls” several times and it’s such a delicate sound as the vocals from Sydney surprisingly mesh really well with Dan and adds a nice balance overall to the eccentric sounds we’ve come to expect from him. I usually end up loving these types of albums as there is always true emotion behind it when you have romantically linked partners like this working together.

There’s a great little quote from Bejar that gives a nice description of the duo’s sound: “When I listen to the sound of it, I hear European pastoral music butting up against a harsh 80’s reality,” Bejar says. “The Hello, Blue Roses songs are completely untethered to any of the bullshit streams coursing through the scene right now. That’s just how Syd writes them; it’s not her fault. They’re completely melodious, but still so strange. It’s a product of not really caring what people think, but still caring a lot about people.”
