Well Hello there Folks. I am back to bring you another edition of the Wednesday Rewind. Today we feature four tracks that have to do with Television and The Arcade. These aren’t just regular songs, all four of these babies are on the Billboard top 100 for their year. (Sad!)
The first and worst of the four is the song “Greatest American Hero.” This was a theme song to a show by the same name, and apparently the premise of the show is that a man is given a suit by aliens. This suit gives him special powers. The stupid guy lost the instruction manuel somewhere in the desert, so he has to learn to use the suit by trial and error. This is where the comedy part comes into play. WOW!!! I am so glad I have not seen any part of this show, it sounds horrible. However, I sadly admit, that the theme song is even worse!
Next up we throw down the Miami Vice Theme song. The show itself is hilarious in my opinion, and Don Johnson is pretty much a badass. I totally dig the fashion of the show, and the fact they scoot around in a confiscated Ferrari makes it better. The theme song gets old and repetitive and just plain annoying. I will never for a second understand how a theme song ended up being two and a half minutes long. What the Hell was Jan Hammer thinking!?!?!?
While this isn’t a theme song, everytime I hear this I think of Giorgi Suka-Alex Trebek, better know as Alex Trebek. You got it folks, its The Greg Kihn Band with “Jeopardy”. This song isn’t terrible, but the fact I think about the witty Canadian when I hear this track makes me tear up slightly in a bitter way. Way to ruin the song Alex.
For the Grand Finale, I bring out the heavy hitter. Its not so much they made a song about a arcade game fad, its the horrendous lyrics, and the fact they made an entire album about various arcade games. Buckner and Garcia hit the books with “Pac Man Fever” the song that describes America’s obsession with the quarter arcade game. Here is a line out of the awful lyrics :
“Now I’ve got ‘em on the run, and I’m looking for the high score
So it’s once around the block, And I’ll slide out the back door.
I’m really cookin’ now, eatin’ everything in sight,
All my money’s gone, so I’ll be back tomorrow night.”
Its horrendous. Really, I can’t say anymore, listen for yourself. Also, with each song listed I put their respective year of release and their place on the Billboard top 100 for that year… youch!
