There has been a plethora of great new bands this year; it always seems that I can’t keep up with all the good stuff coming out. But, I figure I’ll just be grateful for what I do end up discovering. One of the more recent finds for me is L.A. band The Deadly Syndrome.
Despite only having been around for a little over a year, The Deadly Syndrome have developed a cohesive sound. The Ortolan, which came out this September, is a disc that, like much of the crop of new indie bands, seems to take cues from throughout rock’s history and mix it up to create their own little spot on the indie map. There are moments of acoustic pop, Broken Social Scene noisiness, Walkmen-esque pianos, and Arcade Fire grandiosity. All in all, it’s indie rock firmly rooted in folk’s mood and instruments. As far as debuts go, this is one solid disc and shows promise for the future. Check it out, and keep an ear open for these guys.
