I’ve been listening to Nicole Atkins a lot this week and I must say that i’ve definitely interested in checking out her debut LP Neptune City that’s due out later in the month on October 30. As far as I know, it was originally slated to be released in June or July, but has often been delayed quite a bit. Last year she was declared by Rolling Stone as one of “10 Artists To Watch” along with having notable opening slots in the past for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and The National.
I actually had her 2006 EP Bleeding Diamonds sent my way a while back and I kind of prefer the simplified sound (Rufus Wainwright-esque at times) seen there that puts the focus squarely on her vocals compared to the few tracks that i’ve heard off the new album that seem to be awash in over-production (not good). Still, I can’t deny how powerful and torchy her vocals are – which have often been compared to a more soulful Loretta Lynn.
One interesting note, I noticed that she’s featured in an American Express ad. Found the video here, which contains “Party’s Over” off of the forthcoming Neptune City.

Yes, her CD was delayed because mixmaster extraordinaire Rick Rubin wanted to work on the final mix.
