With so many male-female indiepop duos nowadays, it seems it would be hard for an up and coming duo like Georgie James distinguish themselves between all of the many well-known acts that are currently out there like Mates of State and The Rosebuds. Then again, it could also be said that this is a winning formula with so many finding success over the past few years. That being said, John Davis and Laura Burhenn who make up Georgie James, are well on their way to joining those ranks with their debut album Places. Davis, formerly of the band Q And Not U, formed the group along with Burhenn who had released several solo albums under her own label, Laboratory Records.
When Places was released last month, it kinda flew off my radar until recently when I finally was able to listen to a few songs. I absolutely fell in love with “Needs Your Needs” and ended up playing it nonstop last week, which followed with continuous plays of the entire album. It’s exactly how I like to discover music. I want to hear it on my own time and just have it fall into my lap without having people telling me to listen to it. From beginning to end, the album is just full of blissful guitar-pop with infectious harmonies and an influence that lovingly embraces 60’s and 70’s pop music.
It’s such a surprisingly great debut and I commend Saddle Creek for releasing this album. It’s interesting though, because it isn’t the type of thing I normally expect from the label, but I guess it’s a sign of how much diverse their lineup has become. Easily one of the best discoveries of the year for me and I highly recommend you check it out for yourself.
