Patrick Cleandenim could, in some ways, be compared to Beirut. He uses copious amounts of orchestration and writes songs as smooth as can be. He’s even on the same record label. But, in my opinion, that’s where it ends. Where Beirut looks to foreign music for inspiration, Cleandenim looks back in time to the sounds of bygone times. Big band sounds and orchestral swells fill almost every moment of his album Baby Comes Home (which came out earlier this year), and one could probably find the album enjoyable on that level alone. But, the beauty of it is that underneath the crafted sounds there are real songs, and good ones at that, and this keeps the album from being a simple genre exercise. Love songs and tales of poisoning cognac- what’s not to love? If you want to put a smile on your face, I’d recommend Patrick Cleandenim.
