Extended weekends are always a welcome occurrence, especially when it entails a minor break from blogging. Though as nice as that is, it’s always difficult to get back into that familiar groove.
During the break I found myself listening to The Magic Numbers primarily, as a lot of their songs seem to pop up all the time and the fact that I still haven’t listened to any of their albums entirely. It’s a shame really, as i’ve known about them since the end of last year when Those The Brokes, the follow-up to their self-titled effort, was released in the UK. The release found it’s way here to the US in July, followed by a short stint in August opening for Rufus Wainwright – which is all the more reason to like this band if you ask me.
There are so many great pop songs on each of these albums and siblings Romeo and Michelle Stodart have the boy-girl harmonies down to a complete science. I love how the female vocals manage to ease their way into each song at just the perfect moment. It’s no wonder that this group was at one point nominated for Mercury Music Prize.

i heard the track paradise lost about 6 months ago and fell in love with them. you’re right about them popping up- in the fall they were on a bunch of tv shows and stuff.
When they first started making waves a year or two ago I was super-interested in them based on descriptions, but every time I sampled any music I felt as though their singing was not up-to-snuff. Here it’s much less insipid – sort of like a pop Kings of Leon – though I’m still not loving how they mix the female vocals. Thanks for giving me a second thought on this band!
