After finally watching a non-subtitled version of the trailer for Control, i’m still not really sure where I stand about wanting to see this. It had actually fallen of my radar for a very long time after initially reading about it’s early development and swirls of rumors that Jude Law was to portray Ian Curtis. My taste for musical biopics is definitely soured now and with it’s continued popularity over the years, I really wonder how much I want to watch these depictions of troubled musicians anymore.
That being said, i’m actually a really big fan of Joy Division and I think there is something very intriguing about the life and work of it’s frontman Ian Curtis. Considering this is based on a memoir by Ian’s wife Deborah, who knows how this entire thing will be portrayed since it will be skewed to her point of view. Though from watching the trailer, director and famed rock photographer Anton Corbijn has given this film a great black and white look and it definitely has a different tone compared to that of 24 Hour Party People.
It’ll be released here in the US on October and will be one of two Joy Division movies released this year. The other being a documentary from Grant Gee.
“Transmission” | Joy Division
“She’s Lost Control” | Joy Division

They spoke to a bunch of other sources (including the other guys from Joy Division, their label manager Tony Wilson and Ian’s lover Annik Honore) before writing the script for the movie so it shouldn’t just be skewed towards Debbie Curtis’ viewpoint. I’m also wary of these tragic musician biopics but the advance press has been extremely positive so I’m looking forward to this one.
got my ticket to see it at the vancouver film fest!
Still not sure how I feel about this…most biopics don’t do it for me. Plus the Killers covering Joy Division can’t be good.
