Were I to play the desert island game and only be able to take a few CDs with me, one of them would probably be the late Dismemberment Plan’s Emergency and I. It’s one of those rare albums that people can agree on (either for or against). I have one friend that loves the D-Plan but usually listens to metal (but maybe that’s because their name sounds like it should belong to a metal band), and another would do the “Emergency and I Test” on girls he dated (he’d play the album for them, see their reaction, and know if it was going to work out). And there was that magical night in Salt Lake City when I watched the D-Plan perform about 5 feet away from me while the Olympics went on in the rest of the city.

Ahhhh, memories.Back to now. Travis Morrison, the D-Plan’s singer, is back as leader of the Travis Morrison Hellfighters, and they have a new album titled All Y’All out August 21. Unlike his last CD, Travistan, there’s some focus to this album, allowing the songs to feel like more than little stops on a genre-hopping safari. After one listen I knew I’d be coming back to it: you’ve got some of the D-Plan’s freakiness, melodies, and manic fun here, with a new enough direction to make it worth listening to. You can steam the album on their website, or just check out “As We Proceed,” with it’s prickly little guitar line and Travis’ unmistakable vocals and wonderful lyrics. Check it out y’all. (Sorry, couldn’t resist)
