When I first heard The Wombats and their catchy as hell track “Backfire @ the Disco” via The Tripwire podcast several months ago, I was sold and i’ve been anxiously awaiting anything new from the Liverpool trio ever since. Thankfully, the group will be releasing their self-titled EP digitally on September 18th. I remember after hearing that one track, I immediately went searching for their debut Girls Boys And Marsupials and was completely flabbergasted to find out that it was initially released in Japan only.

Though the album was loaded with filler, the potential of this band was there for everyone to see on songs like “Moving to New York,” “Patricia the Stripper,” and the aforementioned track above. The songs were just so ridiculously infectious upon first listening that it makes me wish that they would put out a proper full-length sometime soon. This EP will have to do though until then, which is fine with me. Check them out for yourself, and if listening to “Backfire @ the Disco” doesn’t get your blood flowing, than there is something seriously wrong with you.

The band also has this super cute wombat plush toy that I noticed on their website. It’s apparently their mascot and has it’s own name (Cherub the Wombat), along with a myspage page. Sadly, I think it has more friends than our own myspage page.

This takes me back to middle school… not the music, mind you, but the name itself. The school secretary’s nickname was “Wombat” Wommick. She wasn’t too pretty as I recall. I haven’t thought about that in years.

I’ll check out the music now…
    cheers,

I remember hearing this band a long time ago and wanting more. I tried to find more information on them and came up empty handed. Glad to see something new coming out, can’t wait to hear it.
