You may remember a couple of weeks ago that I posted the song “Johnny Boy Theme” from the London duo Johnny Boy. I was lucky enough to hear it one night on WOXY and have been listening constantly ever since. What’s sad about that is the fact that their self-titled debut has been around since 2005. Previously only available through a little indie label in Sweden, I think the album had finally been re-released in the UK very recently.

My question is with all of the recent bands like The Pipettes and Lucky Soul, who have been part of the recent revival of 60s doo-wop girl groups, why haven’t I heard more about Johnny Boy? If anything, they should be spearheading this movement. I haven’t been able to get a hold of the album yet, but these two singles have been some of the best pop songs i’ve heard in recent memory. Even Pitchfork has recognized “You Are The Generation…” as one of the best singles of the decade.

I’m not even sure I can accurately describe how great these songs are myself. I just want to jump up and sing these songs at the top of my lungs because these are just 3 minute songs of pure unadulterated joy. I am unapologetic in enjoying fun, infectious music like this, and I think i’ve madethat fact evident with almost everything I write about now being more or less indie-pop. I think the world would be a much better place if more music like this was around, don’t you agree?

Generation is, possibly, my favorite song ever. I simply can’t understand why they are not HUGE.

I picked up the album last year as an import and while it’s good, be prepared to be a little disappointed. There’s nothing even remotely close to as good as these two.

But yeah, how anyone can be raving about The Pipettes while stuff like this is out there just waiting to be heard defies explanation.
