Imperial Teen

I woke up this morning and finally got around to listening to some new music. I was pleased when I threw on Imperial Teens new album titled “The hair, the TV, the Baby, and the Band”. This album is first in five years for the San Francisco based group, and is on the Merge record label.

The track that sticks out initially for me was “Shim Sham” with its catchy refrain. I had heard this track initially on Stereogum I believe, and I wanted to hear more. When I got the album and I dug deeper, other tracks of highlight for me include “Do it Better”, and “Sweet Potato.

This is a very strong album as a whole, something I seem to be looking for recently in the music I listen to. It blends soft melodies with some nice guitar riffs, shifting at times from softer sort of Belle and Sebastian indie on “Do it Better” to a more Ravonettes or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club style in “Shim Sham”. I highly recommend this album, due out in exactly one week on August 21st.
