Image-from Left – Greg, Erin, Aidin, JimA few weeks back I posted a concert review of Voxtrot (Link). The opener for the show happened to be a relatively new Cincinnati based band called Eat Sugar. I was ultra-impressed with these guys and wanted to do a feature about them, but was waiting for some music to post (at the show they explained they were in the midst of mastering a few tracks.) Well I am back now to tell you more about these folks, as well as give you an idea of their sound (thanks to the band for sending me some MP3s)

Eat Sugar were formed sometime in Mid-2006, after drummer Greg Poneris and synth/bassist Jim Reynolds (formerly of Chalk) connected with frontman Aidin Begosian while he was with a band called The Reaction. Jim and Greg also connect with Erin Proctor, whom they know previously from the band The Fairmount Girls, and Erin is looking to join a band. They began playing shows back in January, and currently are in the midst of recording tracks and playing shows throughout the midwest.

As I have said before, there sound reminds me a little of LCD Soundsystem, with some infusion of new wave and post punk. This sounds translates well to the live shows, and has the ability to get a crowd moving due to the upbeat nature of the music. In addition, the band knows how to perform onstage, and this presence can be sensed in the crowd.

The band is currently unsigned, and has recently mastered four tracks that they will use to send to various promoters, booking agents, and labels, to shop themselves around and get their music to radio. They also have recorded six other tracks that will be mastered in the near future, and will get back in the studio to record five more. The band has been recording at Ultrasuede studios in Cincinnati.

At the time of writing this, I was told by Greg that promo CD’s are being pressed and after this the band will begin the process of shopping themselves around (As I said they are unsigned). In the meantime, they will continue to play shows throughout the midwest (Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Cincinnati). So far, Eat Sugar has opened for acts such as The Presets, Voxtrot, and most recently Shiny Toy Guns. Give these guys a listen, and I definitely recommend seeing a live set as well.
