Recently, I heard these Black Kids tracks from Cable & Tweed and I ended up really latching onto “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You,” which is a extremely long song name, but an incredibly catchy song. It has a definite 80’s synth-pop sound with The Go! Team-like cheerleader chants thrown in for good measure. Boss Tweed sent the EP my way, which apparently was freely distributed at their performance at this year’s Athens Popfest. Tullycraft’s blog also mentions the Jacksonville, FL quintet as the best band at event.

The EP holds up well with a mix of full-on indie-pop and downtempo songs. Definitely interested in hearing a proper recording from this band soon. Check out their myspace page as they have a number of freebie songs to download.

Yes, I LOVE The Black Kids and i didn’t even see them at Athens Popfest (multiple flat tires meant barely getting there at all)–

I just met them and they were incredibly wonderful. So when i got home and actually listened to their tunes, i was even more thrilled that their music was so supreme. I think they’re the best band that I haven’t seen in a REALLY long time :–)

I can’t wait until they come to New York– they sound like they’d be such a thrill live too!!!

i was really bummed to find that only two of their members are half black. crunch those numbers and you only come up with one black kid. they’re music is pretty catchy, but their name is misleading. i think they should change it.

I was turned on to Black Kids through the same post. I’m glad you mentioned The Go! Team in your description. I’ve been describing them as such but with Robert Smithian lead vocals.

  5. Tad says:

I actually dig this a lot, and given the somewhat exploitive name, I was predisposed to dislike it

    but Black Kids sound good

  6. Rich says:

I hope they come back soon. Florida is so close, yet so far….

Sorry guys, but I found this very average. It’s absolutely no different (very much the EXACT SAME) from everything that is coming out right now and for the past several years. The Black Kids just are not doing anything for me. Also, I was personally quite disappointed at Athens PopFest when I saw them play, live. On a positive note, since most of you are obviously into the synthy 80’s pop-groove … Have you heard that Sam Sparro gentleman? I saw him when I was out in L.A. at this Hot Chip party. None of it is my scene, but he was good. Good is Good. Black Kids – not good.

  8. Mark says:

Alright, Shawn, aka, Sam Sparro? it’s one thing to not really care for a band, but you sound like you have a vendetta! They have a great sound and for every one person that doesn’t like it, there appear to be ten more that do. It is what it is. Hateth not.

  9. Shawn R. says:

Hey Mark, No vendetta. Promise. Don’t get me wrong, I do get why there is a group of people that like this band. They have a sound that has been happening for the past few years and its at its peak, now. It is a familiar sound. As for the band at APF, the one dark haired girl in the band was adorable to watch, but she was it for me. I just did not think them to be a good band when they played live. A healthy group around me at the festival felt the same way. But that is merely our opinions and ya know what they say about opinions. I’m not trying to be mean.

  10. Mark says:

I know what you mean. There are bands that I also don’t care about, but others seem to like. To each his/her own.

  11. Shawn says:

Mark. Just realized you thought I was or am Sam Sparro? Ha! I didn’t even notice that at first. No. I’m not. My name is Shawn. I’m from Atlanta, Georgia by way of the UK.

  12. Mark says:

Hey, Shawn. That was said in jest. Looks like Black Kids’ music is taking off. They’re all over the place; NME, Pitchfork, Vice…either way, they’re making music and if people want to hear it, then it’s a win/win sitch! I’ll also give Sparro a listen. Thanks!

  13. phil says:

there name should be Rich Kids.
its money behind the band not unique awe inspiring talent.

  14. Craig says:

@ phil; I think they received attention just recently. The band has been together for over a year…so although they may have some backing eventually, this was not the case this time.

  15. phil says:

you obviously dont know anything about that bands members.
    try Kool Kids.

  16. funkrusher says:

Wow…that name is so totally misleading! I highly doubt that these “kids” are even in high school. They are totally undoing everything that Kris Kross and ABC worked so hard to build up. It’s a huge step backwards for true kids the world over.

  17. TheOtherOne says:

What isn’t a bit derivative. I’m sick of that. There isn’t a single band out there that is original and there hasn’t been for years. All music really does is build on the past, take bits and pieces of diffent things and blend them. This band does that quite well. There are reasons styles and genres become popular, becuase the bulk of music coming out of it is rather good. These guys write catchy songs, with nice sounds, To me it’s a little Pet Sounds meets Funeral and that is a very good thing. Oh yeah, and what’s a name got to do with it. We’re you expecting black music, what is black music, what the fuck does this statment have to do with anything, why am I still writing, I’ll stop now.

  18. Pete Di. says:

NME sucks and has for quite sometime as far as the true independent community is concerned and I was suffice to say –even a healthy fraction of the mainstream would agree. Also, Pitchfork is neck-in-neck with NME as far as being a big fat joke. And don’t get me started on VICE. VICE use to be valid, but anymore –another joke. Speaking of jokes –The Black Kids and their music. Please let them burn out and die like most of these Myspace crap ass bands that have garnered the same amount of hype. The difference between these bands I speak of and The Black Kids are that The Black Kids are the absolute worst I’ve actually heard. So, the shittier your band –the more attention these scenester bloggers give you? And then the bloggers’ sheep will follow? And let us not forget using your ethninticity to get attention (Being two of the members of The Black Kids are half black). I’m sure they’ll use that accusation to their advantage, as well. Whatever. Screw this big turd known as The Black Kids. RADIOHEAD and IN RAINBOWS –let’s talk about THAT! Or are their lyrics and music just too much for you to comprehend?

  19. Carmen says:

WHO CARES !!!!!!!!!!!!!! PETE DI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLACK KIDS ROCK ON BABY!!!!!!! THE NAME OF A BAND CAN NEVER MAKE A BAND SO STOP HATIN. THE NAME COULD BE GREEN KIDS, BLUE KIDS OR EVEN WHITE KIDS WHO CARES. YOU MUST BE MAD THAT YOU DON’T ROCK LIKE BLACK KIDS!!!!!!!!!!! POOR LITTLE PETE DI. DO YOU WANT A BAND? ARE YOU MAD BECAUSE YOUR NOT GETTING ANY ATTENTION? SO THE BIG FAT JOKE ON YOU! GET A LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT YOU HATE I LOVE!!!!! BLACK KIDS 4 EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #1 FAN

  20. Pete Di. says:

    carmen,

you with this retort and being a fan explains everything. by the way, i’m a father and the proud owner of a record store … i get enough attention. don’t get upset that people are starting to state how much they loathe music such as The Black Kids. i’m not the only one, my dear. rather, i’m one of many.

  21. Lisa Thomas says:

Okay … Phil??? WTF?? Rich Kids? Are we talking about the same band, here? We are talking about The Black Kids from Jacksonville, Florida? If we are, indeed, talking about The Black Kids from Jacksonville, Florida -I’ve known these “rich kids” for several years and they are by no means “rich”. And even if they were/are “rich” … what does that have to do with their music or the sudden spotlight that has been shined upon them? You sound a tad-bit bitter, Phil. Even if you don’t like their music, you should try to stick with the topic rather than attacking them on a personal level. Having an opinion about their music is one thing, but when people such as yourself continue to bash them on a personal level .. it pisses me off.

  22. Mike says:

This band is sooo gay. Can’t belive people actually listen to this crap.

  23. Suki says:

I like “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You” a lot! Are you guys SURE that The Go Team! is not related to them through a music or video producer? I saw the videos for both of them in the same bar, months apart. The similarities in their musical style and the video styles are uncanny.

Sorry some of you don’t like. Taste is highly individual. I am cranking to the tune now on youtube :)

  24. Suki says:

One of the few bands these days that are almost identical live to their studio video
