Until I saw the director’s name attached to this trailer for Be Kind Rewind tonight, I wouldn’t even imagine that this was the next film from the visual auteur Michel Gondry. I had no idea that this was even in development, but that goes to show how much I keep up with this kind of news. The odd thing about it is that the film seems to lack the weird idiosyncrasies we have come to expect from the director. The odd, dream-like environments and effects that litter each of his films are nowhere to be found. It makes the trailer look almost – dare I say – too normal.
The premise is sort of weak as it involves Jack Black playing a video store worker who somehow manages to demagnetize all of the video tapes. To rectify the problem, he and his coworker (Mos Def) begin to remake the movies themselves on basically a shoestring budget. This is where the film shows the most potential as watching the two remake movies like Ghostbusters, Robocop and Boyz n the Hood just look fucking hilarious. I think scenes like this could play to the strengths of Gondry, as he’s basically the master of amazing and unique practical effects with modest budgets.
I’m looking forward to this one after watching the trailer though, and just having Gondry attached heightens my interest tenfold. Enjoy the trailer below and mark your calendars as Be Kind Rewind is set for a limited theatrical release on December 21st.
