VHS or Beta went to Lexington the past Friday night, so I made the journey as well. I’ve been wanting to see these guys for a while now, and in the past few years, their live band sets have been few and far between in the area. (However, there are DeeJay sets every once in a while.) With the upcoming release of “Bring on the Comets”, due out August 28th, this Louisville based band is back on the road in full support of their third LP.

A couple of weeks back VHS or Beta posted a couple of tracks on their myspace page. If you are a consistent reader to The Yellow Stereo, you may have seen my previous post about it (if not… here is a link). These tracks were very different, with “Burn it Down” being more of the vintage VHS sound, while “Can’t Believe a Single Word” shows the direction the band seems to be moving towards.

The show was solid, and while it is difficult to gauge what “Bring on the Comets” will sound like by hearing live tracks, I still liked the sound and vibe of the show. The set list consisted of four tracks off of “Night on Fire” and eight tracks off of the upcoming “Bring on the Comets.” There were no tracks off “Le Funk”, which is understandable because that album is more for DeeJay sets rather than a live band concert.

My favorite track from the new material was “Burn it all Down.” I am sure my opinion is based off of these facts: A. I heard this track before the show (unlike the other new tracks), and B. the sound is more parallel to that of Night on Fire, and it fits in my comfort zone. Of the tracks played from “Night on Fire”, I was happy to hear them play “You Got Me” and “Night on Fire,” the crowd favorite and biggest single for VHS or Beta.

As I said before, the show was solid, and I am left with anticipation for the new album, and the direction it will take the band. Go see these guys if you can, they are touring all around the states (and Canada) here shortly. Hopefully if all works out this week I will be able to interview Craig Pfunder, frontman for the VHS or Beta, to get an inside look at this upcoming album. Set List and Tour Dates below.
