After the site suspension madness that I have been dealing with since this morning, I needed a certain kind of music to calm myself down tonight. If there’s one album this year that could quench that specific need, it would certainly be The Besnard Lakes’ The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse. It’s an album that I came onto really late after a recommendation from a friend (back in March), and since then I couldn’t be more thankful to have been introduced to them. It’s the main reason i’ve never talked about them here on the blog until now.
If you’ve yet to listen to this Montreal six-piece, I suggest you listen to the epic and outstanding track “For Agent 13″ and hopefully you will be just as enthralled with this band as I was after I first heard it. It’s a track that absolutely kills me every time I hear it. Like the majority of the album, the sound is part chamber-rock mixed with a little post-rock and shoegaze. Honestly, it’s really hard to describe. What really makes the song work are the vocals from Olga Goreas, one-half of the husband and wife duo that head the group. Hearing her ethereal voice reminds me of Hope Sandoval, as it feels like envisioning a shining light deep in the background of complete darkness. The vocals are just something you want to gravitate to, along with husband Jace Lasek, who’s harmonies provide such great chemistry when together on a song.
After listening to the album so many times, I highly recommended you pick this up if you haven’t. It’s still early, but I can safely say that this will be one of my favorite albums of the year. There’s only eight tracks, but each track is amazing and worth double it’s weight in value. You can pickup The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse via Jagjaguwar. Also, check out the “For Agent 13″ video below. It’s excellent.
