Originally based out of Atlanta, LEYODE (pronounced LEE-ode) is the pet project conceived by Yusuke Hama and Laurel Wells, who both now reside in Brooklyn. The duo signed to Prefuse 73’s Eastern Developments label, as Yusuke and Prefuse (Scott Herren) were already friends for years after meeting in Atlanta. In fact, he appears on one of the tracks “Hassami” under his Savath y Savalas moniker.

I listened to their upcoming debut fascinating tininess in it’s entirety earlier at work today and I was completely blown away by one track in particular called “Soft or Gentle?” as it manages to capture the best of what the album has to offer. The sound overall seems to go for a combination of instrumental hip-hop and electronic-pop, layered with Laurel’s lovely vocal harmonies, violins and pianos. Which is fitting considering Yusuke started in music with classical violin and piano training. It’s wonderful sounding record with hard beats and great samples, but there is a certain elegance to it all that makes it highly enjoyable. Definitely keep an eye out fort his one as it’ll be released on June 5th via Eastern Developments.
